Social Justice

"Whenever you did it for the least of my brothers or sisters, you did it for me…"
-Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 25)

The challenge that Jesus gives to all his brothers and sisters in the Gospel is to care for those who are less fortunate, those who are outcasts, those who are rejected, those who have no one to call "brother" or "sister." We are called to become brother and sister to the whole world.

The Newman Community takes these responsibilities very seriously. 21st Century American University Students are a blessed lot. A University Community is resource rich and university students largely live lives free of real want. The advantages at the fingertips of UofA students are astounding. The leadership of the Newman Community believes that it is our responsibility to challenge students to a) be aware of their blessed state, b) express sincere gratitude for their blessings, and c) share those blessings with those who are less fortunate.

For more than a century, the Roman Catholic Church has led the world as a promoter of Justice and defender of the under-privileged. At the center of Catholic Social Justice teaching is the belief God is "pulling for the underdog" and that He calls us to be his hands and voice in the world. This "preferential option for the poor" drives Newman's attempts educate and act for social justice in the world.

Throughout the year many projects, large and small, are organized for the entire Newman Community by the Student Social Justice Team. These are direct opportunities for Christian men and women to make a difference in the lives of the under-privileged. This difference is made we choose to share our lives with others.

In addition to projects and direct action, the Social Justice Team also organizes lectures, classes, discussions, films and outings intended to help all of us grow in our understanding of the Gospel demand of justice and the rich tradition of Catholic Social Teaching.

All students are encouraged to offer some time in service of others. The opportunities offered through the Newman Center will enhance your overall religious experience while at the University.
